Pet Peeve: You Can’t Win

Posted in politics by roving on December 12, 2008

One of my big pet peeves is how for example your utility company will give you ideas on how to save money by using less energy in with your bill.  I see the ads on TV now and then giving out tips.

The pet peeve comes here. After turning heat down and turning off lights when leaving the room, what always comes next  is the utility companies asking for rate increases because now they are losing money.

When all the talk was about electric cars, the first thing that came to my mind was if more and more people own one, that would mean less money going into the fuel tax that pay for roads. The second thought was where we would get all the electricity to power these cars?

States and the Government are already losing gas tax revenue without the use of electric cars because people have drastically cut back on their driving.

I first saw CA come up with the idea of a mileage based tax. I was wondering how would they pull this off? Put some kind of black box in your car that sends the information to a master computer? Then I read where one state came up with the idea of every year when we go to the DMV to pay for our new registration they would record the odometer reading and you can pay the tax along with the your registration. At tax time if your eligible you can deduct part of the amount then.

I see problems with this already. I try to stay away from the DMV because its like a waiting room in hell. A place to go if you have no life. If they are slow now, add in the odometer reading everything comes to a stand still. I usually get mine at either a bank or a license service business.  Will this mean now people are forced to go to the DMV? I cant see a bank teller coming outside to read your odometer.

What it comes down to is you cannot win. You can cut back but they will get their money one way or another. The more you try and save money the more the government and utilities will raise price and tax. My advice, use as much energy you want. Drive as often as you can.
